This course is designed to teach the English language to students who are not native speakers and who wish to navigate the English-speaking world more easily.
Geared toward those in the workforce with at least a minimum of spoken English, speakers at all levels will improve conversation, spelling, and reading skills. There is a focus on punctuation and grammar as well as the vocabulary needed to move with confidence from the grocery store to the doctor’s office to the workplace.
Materials will be provided. There is no cost for the class although regular attendance is expected. Registration is required.
In-person learning has returned to the Notre Dame Health Care Campus. You must be able to provide proof of vaccination in order to attend.

Adult Basic Education: English for the Workplace (ESL)

The High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) provides students the opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma. This diploma is recognized as a key to employment opportunities, career advancement, and further education. The test consists of five sections in the areas of mathematics, writing, science, social studies and reading, focusing more on critical thinking and decision-making skills rather than rote memorization of facts. Students may also use this course as preparation for college entry.
Testing options are on computer or with paper and pencil and we’ll prepare you for both. Don’t let fear hold you back! This smaller sized class enables each student to receive individual attention in a comfortable atmosphere. Only test when you feel ready.
The Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is the nursing school admission exam and is also required for admission to many other health care study programs. As the TEAS scores the same subjects covered in HiSET preparation we have combined these sessions to address both. Our teachers not only provide group instruction but also individual resources and material for the student’s particular needs. For example, TEAS students receive additional biology and anatomy preparation directed towards the TEAS. Practice testing is a valuable component.

<li>Classes take place in the Notre Dame Educational Bridge Center at 555 Plantation Street in Worcester. You must be able to provide proof that you have full COVID vaccination status.</li>

Adult Basic Education: High School Equivalency/Test of Essential Academic Skills/College Preparation

Take the path towards Certification as a Certified Dementia Practitioner™ (CDP™) through the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP).
This is a required seminar for those pursuing CDP™ certification. To see if you qualify, please visit the NCCDP website at www.nccdp.org.
You may also participate in this educational seminar without pursuing certification.

Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Seminar

In this one-day workshop, you’ll learn effective strategies to lead your staff. The material is straightforward and practical.

Fundamentals of Leadership: How to Bring Out the Best in Your Staff

Math for Meds is a pharmacology preparation course for nursing students. The course begins with a review of basic mathematical principles, then progresses through drug dosage calculations, ratio and proportion, and medication safety. Common drug measures will also be discussed, and medication labels reviewed. By the end of the 30-hour course, students will have hands-on experience with injections and IV drip rate calculations.
If class size permits, students may observe a long-term care med pass.
Books and calculators will be provided.

Math for Meds

This 39-hour course is designed to prepare potential college students with the skills they need to be successful on the college placement test. Furthermore, this course begins to prepare students for the rigors of college-level classes.
In this class we cover the important skills of:
<ul>
<li>Reading comprehension</li>
<li>Basic grammar</li>
<li>Writing skills and</li>
<li>Test taking skills</li>
</ul>
We utilize a variety of reading materials to help students learn the secrets of successful reading and to help them expand their vocabulary. Students will learn to apply their new skills to competently apply the writing process to a wide variety of writing assignments, particularly the college placement.
This course is scheduled on an as needed/requested basis.

Reading, Writing, and Reaching Your Goals

The ServSafe™ Manager training program provides classroom instruction to help students prepare to take the ServSafe™ Food Protection Manager Certification Exam. Teaching methods include PowerPoint and DVD, as well as lecture from an instructor with experience in the field of Food Service. Topics covered include critical principles such as personal hygiene, cross-contamination, time and temperature, receiving and storage, food safety management systems, hourly employee training, and more.
This 8-hour class includes breakfast and materials. Classroom instruction and review will be followed by the Certification exam. Exam will be taken using pencil/paper and students will have results within 10 days. Online testing may be possible for an additional fee.

ServSafe™ Food Manager Certification

This class is designed to help students improve their skills and confidence in spoken English.&nbsp; Students will practice the basic sounds of English as well as work on stress, intonation, rhythm, and linking. They will practice self-assessment, understand how their native language influences their pronunciation in English, and recognize the strengths of their own accents.
Class will be small and friendly (no more than 10 students). Mirrors and recording devices will be used to familiarize students with how their English sounds and the proper pronunciations. The goal of this class is to make students more comfortable speaking in English by reducing native accents which may hinder being understood in public. Students from all countries are welcome – we will learn from each other!
This course is scheduled on an as needed/requested basis.

Following that tradition, in 2004, Notre Dame Health Care established the Educational Bridge Center to develop a lasting culture of learning and growth within the long-term care community, offering courses for Notre Dame Health Care employees and others from similar facilities seeking to cross the “bridge” to enter nursing programs.
As the needs of the health care community changed over the years, the Educational Bridge Center expanded its mission into the greater community and beyond, offering services to train caregivers who work with memory-impaired elders or specialize in end-of-life or palliative care. Health and wellness programming, open to both residents and the community, was added, along with ServSafe™ training to certify those in the food service industry in Food Management and Safe Food Handling.
Over the years, services have included various levels of support for staff and community members who have sought opportunities to earn a degree, and ultimately obtain a better life for themselves and their families.

A primary focus of the Educational Bridge Center is to support college-bound students who lack a high school diploma, which can be a barrier to career advancement. We also focus on assisting those who have come from other countries and need assistance improving their English.
<h4>Facilities and Services</h4>
The Educational Bridge Center building includes a quiet library learning center with wired study space for students who otherwise would not have access to the internet or an appropriate place to study, and more recently, we’ve added remote learning to broaden availability of education.
In addition, the Educational Bridge Center provides basic career coaching services and assists students in securing scholarships. More than $40,000 in scholarships has been awarded from Notre Dame Health Care and other organizations, including Wisdom’s Way, MA Senior Care Foundation, Long Term Care Financing Association, the Maranatha II Trust and the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
Program participants are required to self-screen for COVID-19 in order to be present in the facility and participate in classes. Masks are required in certain areas of our buildings. 
Due to regulatory requirements governing healthcare settings, all program participants must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Tutors are needed for:
<ul>
<li>Basic high school math</li>
<li>English vocabulary and grammar, reading, writing and conversational English</li>
<li>Nursing school prep, including tutoring for the TEAS exam and individual subject study support</li>
<li>Citizenship preparation, which consists of instruction on the 100 questions/answers that candidates need to know to prepare for their interview to become a U.S. Citizen, as well as the vocabulary contained on the N-400 application. Basic civics, history and government with curriculum will be provided.</li>
